Coffee 101 - The Beginning
The Legend
According to a coffee history legend, an Arabian shepherd named Kaldi found his goats dancing joyously around a dark green leafed shrub with bright red cherries in the southern tip of the Arabian Peninsula. Kaldi soon determined that it was the bright red cherries on the shrub that were causing the peculiar euphoria and after trying the cherries himself, he learned of their powerful effect.
Kaldi dutifully reported his findings to the abbot of the local monastery who made a drink with the berries and discovered that it kept him alert for the long hours of evening prayer. Soon the abbot had shared his discovery with the other monks at the monastery, and ever so slowly knowledge of the energizing effects of the berries began to spread. As word moved east and coffee reached the Arabian peninsula, it began a journey which would spread its reputation across the globe.
Today: The journey continues.
The euphoric experience as described in the legend is equally powerful today. The coffee experience has evolved to the “coffee culture”- a catch phrase defined as A lifestyle characterised by drinking coffee (especially in a coffee shop having Wi-Fi access) as a social activity.
As part of that evolution, coffee though first experienced through eating the beans, is now available in many different forms. Some enjoy the dark strong taste of espresso; others prefer the lighter taste of a latte. Some coffee drinkers baulk at the thought of flavored coffee served over ice while others can’t imagine a more appealing treat.
